The Bayport-Blue Point School District successfully hosted its third annual Community & Cocoa 5K Fun Run/Walk on Dec. 14, bringing together students, families, staff and community members. In collaboration with the high school’s Wellness Club and the district’s Social Emotional Learning Committee, the event was organized by several of the high school’s students with the goal of raising awareness for suicide prevention.
The morning kicked off with a special half-mile “fun run” for elementary school students on the Bayport-Blue Point High School track. Led by the Grinch, the young runners were cheered on by high school students who held signs and encouraged them as they circled the track. Each elementary participant received a commemorative ornament for their efforts.
The 5K run/walk followed, attracting participants of all ages from throughout the district and community. Proceeds from the event will benefit the high school’s Wellness Club, helping fund student-led initiatives and programs focused on mental health and wellness.
“People often ask me, ‘What’s so special about BBP?’, and this is really what is so special about our community,” said Superintendent Dr. Timothy P. Hearney. “Whether we’re celebrating someone’s success or going through tough times, we continuously come together.”
The Community & Cocoa 5K Fun Run/Walk serves as a testament to the district’s ongoing commitment to supporting the social-emotional well-being of its students and the greater community.
