In honor of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, Academy Street Elementary School held a special town hall assembly. Teacher Lauren Higgins was joined by her brother, James, who has Down syndrome. The pair spoke to students about what Down syndrome is, while James shared his interests, experiences and goals.
On World Down Syndrome Day, people around the world are asked to wear brightly colored, mismatched socks. In preparation for the day, Academy Street students met to tie-dye their very own pairs of socks. March 21 is symbolic because people with Down syndrome have three copies of the 21st chromosome and socks were chosen, specifically, because the karyotype of Ds chromosomes looks like mismatched socks. On the day of the town hall, students wore their pre-made socks to celebrate, support and spread awareness for Down syndrome.
Throughout James’ presentation, students learned that although he does some things differently, he can do anything he sets his mind to. He shared goals that he’d accomplished such as learning to ski and running a 5k race at Disney World. He also shared things he loves to do such as painting, riding rollercoasters and taking care of animals. In turn, students excitedly raised their hands in agreement if they shared the same interests. Students learned that they have more similarities than differences to those with Down syndrome.
At the end of the town hall, students had the opportunity to ask James questions such as, “What’s your favorite ride at Disney World?”, “How old are you?”, “What’s your favorite sports team?” and many more. James’ impressive artwork was also put on display for all to see afterwards.
